Article Synopsis
Risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) in the elderly remain controversial. In particular, the projected impact of high blood cholesterol in the elderly has been challenged. Knowledge of risk factors for CAD in the elderly may be improved by more specific focus on acute myocardial infarction (AMI)

At the 12 year follow-up in the ongoing cardiovascular study, this report examines the risk factors for acute myocardial infarction to improve the knowledge of risk factors for CAD.

The study found that conventional risk factors such as cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, smoking and family history, still predict the onset of AMI in the elderly. Those with metabolic syndrome appear to be at particular risk.
